EDLab – Environmental Diagnostics Laboratory
Seattle, WA —KIRO 7 TV revealed that Legionella, which causes a potential serious type of pneumonia, was found in some
of the University of Washington Medical Center’s water supply. It is stated that two people who received care in the cardiac unit died with contributing factors of Legionella bacteria that can cause Legionaries’ Disease.
This incidence further strengthens the need of a “Water Management Plan” for the management and prevention of Legionella related issues. According to Building Operating Management magazine, expert Victor Yu, MD, Professor of Medicine, University of Pittsburgh; Chief, Infectious Disease Section, VA Medical Center, Pittsburgh, PA, USA disclosed that “Up to 70% of all buildings greater than three stories in the US may be contaminated with Legionella.”
Legionella identification and prevention in buildings and hospitals is not very difficult. A few systematic steps can avoid the contraction of Legionella from an environmental source. These steps include, but are not limited to, periodical monitoring of a building’s water system, laboratory testing for Legionella, and remedial/preventive maintenance. “Now with cutting edge PCR technology, the potential Legionella contamination in water can be screened within a few hours.” stated by Dr. Rajiv Sahay, Laboratory Director, Environmental Diagnostics Laboratory at Pure Air Control Services, Inc., Clearwater, Florida.
Dr. Sahay, with EDLab, provides free webinars on Legionella related topics periodically. Stay tuned for dates and times for one such webinar by visiting the EDLab website.
